Recypark continues preparations, receives positive EIA assessment and submits application for funding from the EU Innovation Fund

SMOLO announces that the Recypark project, focused on the processing of mixed municipal and similar waste — more than half of which is currently landfilled — has received a positive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). This step allows the project to proceed to the next phase of preparation, contributing to effective recycling and sustainability.
Horní Benešov, 10 June 2025
The project, planned on the site of a former polymetallic ore tailings pond in Horní Benešov, will use technology from the Canadian company OMNI Conversion Technologies Inc. This innovative technology will convert waste into synthetic gas, which will then be used for the production of methanol. Methanol has broad application in the chemical industry and also serves as an advanced fuel for transport and energy. A second materially recoverable product will be vitrified slag, which can be used in construction and other sectors.
“Recypark represents an environmentally and technologically advanced solution for processing waste that would otherwise be unusable. The positive EIA confirms that the project meets strict environmental standards in the field of environmental protection, which allows us to continue with preparations and implementation,” said Petr Doležel, Managing Director of Recypark s.r.o., the company established to implement the project.
Path to Funding
The Recypark project was submitted in April of this year to the EU Innovation Fund call, where it was classified as a “large-scale project.” A total of more than 350 applications were submitted from 28 EU countries, with 39% falling into this category. SMOLO believes that successful support of the project will secure the necessary resources for its implementation. The company is also exploring additional funding opportunities for sustainable development and efficient waste processing within Recypark.
Respect for Public Concerns
The Recypark project in Horní Benešov underwent a detailed Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), which yielded excellent results. No state institution — including nature conservation, forestry, soil, or hygiene authorities — raised any objections or negative assessments. This clearly demonstrates the project's compliance with all applicable legislative standards and high standards of environmental and public health protection.
Despite objections raised by a nonprofit environmental association regarding potential impacts on nature and public health, official expert assessments confirm that the project is environmentally friendly and safe.
“We are aware of the concerns that may arise among local residents regarding new technologies. That’s why we focus on maximum transparency and providing verified information to help dispel doubts. On the project website, in the ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ section, we address concerns related to emissions and other potential impacts,” said Ivana Kubacká, spokesperson for the Recypark project.
In its final opinion dated 28 May 2025, the Moravian-Silesian Regional Authority confirmed that all concerns were thoroughly considered and that the project can be implemented, provided that all legislative, environmental, and organizational requirements are met, including the use of Best Available Techniques (BAT/BREF), which SMOLO considers a key principle in project implementation.
